Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech among Golf Digest's "best new remodel" golf courses for 2006
BLACKSBURG, Va. - Golf Digest, the nation's leading golf magazine, has named the Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech among the "Best New Remodel" golf courses for 2006. The River Course was ranked fourth among the 170 courses considered, and was the only public, non resort course in the top five.
Men's Association concludes 2006
Radford,Va-The Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech recently completed the Inaugural Season of the Men's Golf Association with a very successful "River Ryder Cup" style event. Team captains Loopy Price, Ralph Arthur, Bobby Swain, and Todd Ullman met on Friday for a captain's only meeting where the teams were selected and match-ups determined. Each team consisted of five players. Every team member participated in 4 different 9-hole matches, each with a different format. Two man captain's choice, two man best ball, two man alternate shot, and singles were the formats used. Each match was worth ten points and every team was involved in 13 matches over the two-day event. The team led by Loopy Price jumped out to an early lead on Saturday by winning 5 of their first 6 matches and continued their dominance on Sunday by not losing any of their 7 matches. Great fun was had by all. The next event will be held in the spring to open the golf season. If you are not currently a member of the Men's Golf Association you are encouraged to join simply by showing up on Saturday and Sunday mornings and playing with the group. Krulich Wins Club Championship in Playoff
Radford,Va. - Mike Krulich parred the second playoff hole to defeat Brian Kitts to win the 2006 Pete Dye River Course Club Championship. Kitts fired a tournament low 2 under par 70 in the first round to take a 5 shot lead over his closest pursuers. During the second round Krulich fired 75 while Kitts shot 80. Both players 36 hole total was 6-over par 150. The Senior Club Championship was won by Tyler Will with a 36 hole total of 161. Will bested defending champ Buddy Martin by 7 shots. In the Ladies Division Ms.Juanita Petrone secured her 5th Ladies championship with a score of 178. Results of all flights are listed below:

Team Ullman Captures Two Man Invitational
Radford,Va. - The team of Todd Ullman and Brad "Pee Wee" Ullman combined to shoot a 36 hole total of 132 to capture the First Annual Two- Man Invitational at Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech. The team of Brian Kitts and Adam Gerald finished in second 3 shots back. The final 18 was a better ball format and the teams were paired together for the round. The First Flight was captured by Barry Akison and teammate Steve Yatsko with a total of 143. The second flight was won by the all member team of Al Wojtera and Craig Waggaman . The event was highlighted by gifts from The Inn at Virginia Tech and crystal awards to the flight winners. Complete results are listed below.

Swain/Gerald Team Prevail at Member/Guest
Radford, Va.- The team of Bobby Swain and Adam Gerald shot a 36 hole total of 137 to win the 2006 Member/Guest by one shot over John Hite and his partner Mike Ligon. The Swain/Gerald duo sealed the victory on hole 16 as Bobby Swain birdied to put the team two ahead with two to play. In other flights, the team of Ullman /Driscoll won the 1st Flight and Swecker/ Bailey won the 2nd flight in a playoff. The event was highlighted by a putt off for 2 season tickets to Virginia Tech football in 2006. Jon Kopf hit a 65 foot putt to 4 inches to win the coveted prize. Thanks to Pepsi for their sponsorship of the event and Congratulations to the Winners!!!

Junior Golf Camp

Radford,Va- The 2006 Junior Golf Camp strikes a pose!!! Junior Camp began on Monday ,July 31st with 19 juniors participating. Coaches John Norton, Keith Jarrell and Mike Krulich will direct the juniors for the week. Skills competition, awards and Pizza party are scheduled for Friday.
Dedication Of The Pete Dye River Course Of Virginia Tech
Radford, Va.- The dedication of the Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech was held on June 5, 2006. The program honored major golf course benefactors Bill and Alice Goodwin and world-renowned golf course architect Pete Dye. Mr. Dye was recognized for his contribution by University President Dr. Charles Steger. The Goodwin's were recognized for their support of the project by Dr. Steger and Virginia Tech Golf Coach Jay Hardwick.
Mr. Dye was presented a commemorative picture of the golf course with an inscription depicting the dedication. As a token of appreciation from the golf program Mr. and Mrs. Goodwin were named Honorary Life Members of the Virginia Tech Golf Team.
The program emcee was Dr. Raymond D. Smoot, Chief Operating Officer of the Virginia Tech Foundation. The dedication culminated with the unveiling of a flag from the Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech complete with the signatures of both Bill Goodwin and Pete Dye. The framed edition will hang in the clubhouse. A celebratory breakfast and golf followed the program. Tours of the Golf Team Complex and Turf Care Center were available to those in attendance.

Daigre Scores First Ace on Hole #5
Radford, VA - Carol Ann Lineweaver aced the 14th hole at Pete Dye River Course on Sunday, September 3rd. Carol Ann used a pitching wedge from 106 yards. The feat was witnessed by Butch Vanhoosier and Dan Lineweaver.

Daigre Scores First Ace on Hole #5
Radford, VA - Benny Daigre of Radford registered his first ace ever on the newly designed #5 hole at Pete Dye River Course on August 8th, 2006. The feat was witnessed by Larry Maust and Buddy Shull. The shot was struck from 166 yards and Benny used a six iron.

Petrone/Hughes Win Ladies Member-Guest
The 2006 Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech Ladies Member-Guest was held on Wednesday, July 19th. Juanita Petrone and Barbara Hughes claimed the gross title with a team score of 78. Bonnie Hurlburt and Carolyn Black won the net title with a team score of 66.

Radford,Va. - The 2006 Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech Adult/Junior was held on Saturday, July 16th. Matthew and George Sanders won the 14-17 year old division with a team best ball score of 68. Brock and Tim Cox won the 10-13 year old division with a team best ball score of 71. In the 9 year old and under division, Bradley and Michael Hicks claimed the title with a net score of 73.

Cote Named Superintendent at Pete Dye River Course

Radford, Va. - The Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech is proud to announce the appointment of Mark Cote to the position of Head Golf Course Superintendent. Mark served as the superintendent at The Homestead's Old Course for eight years prior to coming to "The River". Previously, he spent time at The Greenbriar and Farmington Country Club. Mark grew up in Boston, started work in the golf business as a teenager, and continued through college. He is a 1984 graduate of Colby College and received his Associates Degree in Turf Management from Virginia Tech. Mark is a Class "A" member of the Golf Course Superintendents of America.
"We are very pleased to have Mark join our team at the Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech. His experience at top-level facilities is consistent with the expectations we have for "The River", said Jay Hardwick, Director of Golf Operations.
Mark and his wife Tina have a daughter Eliza. They reside in Blacksburg and are excited to be back in the VT community.
Ace on Hole #5 Recorded

Congratulations to David Hannah for making a hole-in-one on February third. David aced the fifth hole using a six iron from 180 yards. Witnesses were Keith Neidig and Larry Maust.
